Secure Online Environment for Your Children

Children nowadays are more advanced compared to those in 90's in term of the opportunity to have access to computer and internet. The fact that they are not yet matured and their thinking level is still in the beginning, it is crucial for parents to spend some times to guide their children on the right way of using computer and internet. Parents are responsible to provide safe online environment especially at the stage where these children have a great ability to absorb information and knowledge, be it the good one and also the bad one. Have you play your role as the GUARDIAN?

How can parents provide safe online environment to their children? The answer is simple. Parents just need to control their children's view, thru "blocking" inappropriate and unnecessary website. There are many reasons why parents might want to block certain websites from their child's view. The most obvious one is that we do not want our child to be exposed to adult content websites, but that is far from the only reason. For instance, you might decide that you do not want your children accessing social websites. You might, on the other hand, just want to block a website from your child because there was a potential exposure to financial scam when your children giving out personal information to strangers.

How to Block Sites Using Internet Explorer

  • Go to "Tools" in the Internet Explorer window. Scroll down to "Internet Options." Click it and then click the "Contents" tab in the window that opens.
  • Look at the "Content Advisor" section. Click "Enable." Then, go to the "Approved Sites" tab.
  • Under "Allow this Web Site" type "*.name of blocked website". Again, exclude the "http://www." portion. The asterisk tells Windows Explorer that the site is to be blocked and not allowed. Click "Never" when finished and "Apply" at the bottom of the page.
  • Go to the "General" tab once you've entered all of the sites to be blocked. Beside the words, "Users can see sites that have no rating," click to put a check in the box. Do the same to the box "Supervisor can type a password to allow users to view restricted content."
  • Scroll down to "Supervisor Password." Click "Change Password" and set your new password. Also, add a hint to help you later if you forget. Click "Apply" at the bottom of the page. Click "OK" to return to Internet Explorer.
